Diary of John Mottram [manuscript], 1865 January 1-July 3.

Private Mottram's diary begins during the siege of Petersburg, and continues through the capture and occupation of Richmond, the end of the war, his mustering out and return home. He discusses routine camp life (drills, inspection, picket duty), desertions from both sides, the entry into Richmond, black troops and civilians, and paroled Confederates and starving civilians in Richmond. He mentions seeing Robert E. Lee and his officers across the lines and watching the Southern commissioners depart for the Hampton Roads Peace Conference. Also of interest are an account of a St. Patrick's Day celebration and grand review for Lincoln and Grant. The diary also contains cash accounts, a roll of Co. K and miscellaneous memoranda.
